“Just one drink…”

26 Sep

If you are struggling to sift those pounds and you are exercising and eating by the book… there may be something else you haven’t thought about that could be ruining all that hard work.

We all know we have to cut back on the chocolate, crisps, chips and suchlike things when we are trying to control our weight, but when it comes to alcohol it seems to get left behind. The concept of a ‘beer belly’ is a well known one and seems to be associated with people drinking huge amounts, and often.  In fact it doesn’t have to mean this. Just one or two drinks can have a damaging effect on weight loss. The facts behind alcohol and weight control are not made clear and, as depressing as it is to read about, it is important that people understand the effect alcohol has on your weight.

The most important thing to realise is that the body cannot store alcohol as easily as other things such as carbohydrates, fat and protein so it has to be metabolised. The body must therefore stop what its doing when you start drinking, and get to work on burning off that alcohol. This means that the body cannot burn off anything else until this is done!!

The fact that alcohol increases your appetite just makes things worse. How many times have you eaten things you probably wouldn’t when drinking? A packet of crisps in the pub, a burger and chips after a night out, hangover morning fry up!? Yes, thats right the body is STILL working on burning off that alcohol the next day. It can take up to 24 hours to get rid of it all. This is 24 hours of the body not being able to do anything but store the other things we eat!

Alcohol contains calories just like anything else and on the whole, alcohol contains 7 calories per gram which is more than carbohydrates or protein. We all know it is not just the calories that we need to watch, we need to look out for the fat and sugar content to find out where our calories are coming from.

This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a drink or two with friends on the weekend, it just means that you have to think twice about what you drink and how much of it you drink. Are you prepared to let all that hard work go to waste?
